Joking in the Chinese Language

2014-05-23 14:46The World of Chinese

Chinese jokes about misspelling, misunderstanding or mispronunciation are common in China. The Chinese people like to crack jokes at laowai and waidiren who move in droves to the main cities and often fail in communication with the locals due to a poor command of the language or having a terrible accent. Such confusion often gives rise to lame jokes, like this one:

A: What color is Spiderman?

B: Red and blue.

A: No, he's white! 是白的 [shì bái de] man!

"白的' means 'white' in Chinese.

Mocking foreigners who came to the country to master the language and who still struggle to learn it while using every opportunity to talk to the locals in their broken Chinese and often confusing tones also leads to a fair few jokes:

老外:"你们中国人的确是一个勤奋的民族."

中国人:"怎见得?"

老外:"每当我早晨经过街道,常常可以看到路旁的招牌写着'早点'两个大字,提醒过路上班的人,不要迟到."

[Lǎowài: Nǐmen Zhōngguórén díquè shì yīgè qínfèn de mínzú

Zhōngguórén: Zěn jiànde?

Lǎowài: Měidāng wǒ zǎochen jīngguò jiēdào, chángcháng kěyǐ kàndào lùpáng de zhāopai xiě zhe 'Zǎo diǎn' liǎnggè dàzì tíxǐng guòlù shàngbān de rén bùyào chídào].

Foreigner:Chinese people are really a very hardworking nation.

Chinese person: How did you learn that?

Foreigner: Every time I pass the street in the morning, I see a board saying "Come earlier!" which reminds people not to be late for work.

Here, 早点 means place where breakfast is served. Such places open very early in the morning, often for those, who don't have time for breakfast at home. And at the same time, 早点 means "Come earlier".
